Baby bottle tooth decay

Baby bottle syndrome

Nursing caries

Bottle ROT

The above terms all refer to a condition caused by liquids such as milk or juice bathing the teeth for long periods of time. Studies have shown dental decay is related to the number of times a child consumes these decay-causing liquids.

This condition may occur when the bottle is used as a pacifier at bedtime or for long periods of contact during the day.

Many parents are unaware of the potential damage that can come from continuous bottle-feeding or nursing.

The use of a bottle or "sippy cup" at bedtime and/or for long contact times during the day with any liquid other than water should be discouraged.
